Is the ASME certified boiler the best?

In recent years, EPCB project engineers have discovered that many customers tend to buy boilers certified by ASME. Why?

Because:

1. It is certified by the American Society of Mechanical Engineers with high authority

2. The boiler inspection requirements are relatively strict, and the safety and reliability are relatively strong.

3. Guaranteed in the quality of material selection

4. Revise or reiterate its standards at least every five years

5. It is regarded as a customs standard in some countries.

Indeed, the quality of ASME certified boilers is not bad.

However, it has a big disadvantage of what we can't ignore:

ASME certified boilers are more expensive than other certified

If your country does not mandate the use of ASME standard boilers, any boiler supplier recommends that you do not purchase them.

ASME is not the only one that is the best.

After comparing various certification standards, it is found that GB (China Certification Standard, hereinafter referred to as GB) certified boilers have much higher standards than ASME in terms of boiler inspection requirements, the boiler inspection process, and boiler inspection time.

It can be seen that in addition to the ASME certified boiler, GB is also a very good choice.

Another more important reason is that GB certified boilers are cheaper than ASME certified boilers.

The following is a comparison of several very important standards that affect boiler safety.

1. Boiler inspection requirements

Small diameter (usually less than 2 inches) boiler tube

GB: 10% to 25% X-ray or ultrasonic flaw detection is required.

ASME: Have no requirements for flaw detection.

2. Boiler inspection process

Weld spectrum analysis:

GB: Required to use 10% of the heating surface pipes for analysis, and sometimes even 100% of the heating surface pipes need to be inspected.

ASME: Have no requirements

3. Boiler acceptance criteria

GB certified boiler requirements:

① If the amount of point defects (≤0.5mm) is greater than 10, the boiler grade will be lowered.

② For sliver defects, the length is ≤ 4 mm.

③ For circular defects, when the wall thickness is 6mm, only one circular defect with a diameter of less than 1.5mm and one circular defect with a diameter of less than 1.0mm are allowed.

ASEM certified boiler requirements

① There is no restriction on point defects (≤ 0.4mm).

② For sliver defects, the length is ≤ 6.35 mm.

③ For circular defects, when the wall thickness is 6mm, the allowable amount is 40 for circular defects diameter less than 1.5mm.

4. Boiler inspection time

GB :

Non-destructive testing needs to be performed again after heat treatment. Pipes with a wall thickness of more than 70mm require intermediate inspection and measurement when they are welded to 20mm. After welding, perform 100% ultrasonic flaw detection.

ASME:

Have no requirements, and it is usually inspected after all work is completed, and then heat treated.

It can be seen that the GB certification standard is far higher than the ASME.

For the boiler body, the price of ASME certification is about $ 15,000 higher than that of GB certification.

For other accessories and parts of the boiler, such as electric control boxes, safety valves, etc., the cost according to ASME is also much higher than the cost of GB certification standards.

Conclusion:

For those countries where ASME certification is mandatory, it is not recommended that you choose BG certified boilers.

If your country has no restrictions on certification standards, EPCB recommends that you choose GB certified boilers.
